Shares in Alcatel-Lucent jumped after the French telecoms equipment maker won a one-year contract worth up to €750m with China Mobile.
The world’s largest mobile service provider is rapidly expanding its 4G mobile network in an ambitious attempt to cover most of the country in the next few years, delivering lucrative contracts for equipment makers.
While Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE have benefited disproportionately, European rivals such as Alcatel, NSN and Ericsson have all picked up jobs to modernise and provide equipment and software to China Mobile.
