Fiat’s chief executive said the carmaker may need to close another plant in Italy if he does not secure further cost-cutting concessions from its workforce.
Sergio Marchionne’s warning came amid signs that PSA Peugeot Citro?n and Ford Motorare also preparing to break Europe’s long-standing taboo on closing car plants because of persistently low industry-wide sales. General Motors has already disclosed plans to close a factory in Bochum, Germany after 2016.
Mr Marchionne told reporters late on Tuesday he expected European car sales to remain at their current level – about 14m – for another two to three years.
