M&S said yesterday that Richard Sweet, who has worked at the retailer for 20 years, was leaving as part of its plans to shed 1,200 jobs from across the chain as it trims its cost base in the face of deepening gloom on the high street. It is cutting 450 jobs from head office.
However, the retailer was quick to stress yesterday that Mr Sweet's departure was not because of hitches at the store, which has been bedevilled by supply problems in the food section and lacklustre reviews from local shoppers.
M&S also said yesterday that the supply difficulties would be “95 per cent resolved” by the end of the week.
