Belgium's King Albert II formally accepted the resignation of the coalition government led by Yves Leterme, prime minister – but ordered it to stay on in a caretaker capacity to deal with “day-to-day” business.
Three days ago, Mr Leterme offered the government's resignation after accusations that officials had tried to influence an appeal court ruling that blocked the dismantling of Fortis, the troubled financial services group.
Over the weekend, the king held long talks with the five ruling coalition parties in an effort to find a way to fill the political vacuum, although last night's statement from the royal palace gave no hint about the shape of a new administration.
