Americans have started streaming to the polls on the east coast and in the Midwest after one of the most divisive presidential races in modern US history as Donald Trump fights for four more years in the White House.
Retailers prepared for possible unrest by boarding up stores ahead of election day, marking the end of a surreal campaign in the shadow of a pandemic that has claimed more than 231,000 American lives and resulted in Mr Trump’s own hospitalisation with Covid-19.
Ahead of polls opening, more than 100m Americans had already cast ballots in person or by mail, equivalent to almost 73 per cent of the entire 2016 vote and putting the country on track for a record turnout.
