Donald Trump has alarmed allies at home and abroad after giving his consent to a Turkish military incursion in north-east Syria designed to quash US-backed Kurdish fighters who have been instrumental in defeating Isis.
After a call between the US president and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, the White House said the US military would not “support or be involved in the operation” that Turkey has repeatedly threatened to launch against US-backed Kurdish militias.
US forces would “no longer be in the immediate area”, it added in a statement. About 1,000 troops are deployed in Syria.
