The US Department of Transportation called for a national recall on millions of vehicles using Takata airbags and said "our aggressive investigation is far from over."
Takata, whose market valuation has fallen 52 per cent since Oct 1, issued an apology last week after a fifth person died from an exploding airbag.
The world's second-biggest airbag maker has said that, in the event of an accident, the front passenger airbag inflators can rupture and spray metal shrapnel. The troubles have so far prompted the recall of almost 17m vehicles worldwide made by at least 10 carmakers including Toyota and General Motors.
