Sir Winston Churchill will be on Britain’s new ￡5 notes, the Bank of England announced on Friday.
The new notes will feature a photograph of the wartime prime minister and his famous words “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” alongside a view of Westminster. In the picture, Big Ben’s hands will point to three o’clock – the time at which Churchill said those words on 13 May 1940.
Sir Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, announced the new note yesterday at Chartwell, Churchill’s former home.
