The US will move dozens of the 215 suspected terrorists held at Guantánamo Bay to a detention centre in Illinois, the White House said yesterday, as President Barack Obama starts delivering on his promise to close the prison camp.
The decision to move detainees on to American soil is controversial, but the Obama administration said yesterday that it would remove one of al-Qaeda's “recruiting tools”.
The US government will buy the Thomson Correctional Centre, an under-utilised 1,600-cell maximum security facility about 150 miles west of Chicago, to house the detainees, the White House said.
