The British bank lured Mr von Daeniken from Credit Suisse, where he had been co-head of Asia-Pacific private banking and head of private banking in south-east Asia and Australasia, based in Singapore.
He had been at Credit Suisse for 17 years in Zurich, Geneva, Dubai and Istanbul. Before that, Mr von Daeniken, who is Swiss, had worked for the Red Cross in Iraq prior to the first Gulf war.
Barclays, whose origins date back 300 years, has had a well-established private bank serving its UK home market for many years. However, it has not been much of international operator until recently and in Asia has lagged behind wealth managers such as UBS, Citigroup, HSBC and Credit Suisse
