One in six people living in England and Wales were born outside the UK, according to a once-a-decade census that shows net migration accounted for more than half the growth in the population since 2011.
Results of the census, which took place in April 2021, showed the foreign-born population had grown by 2.5mn to reach 10mn over the period, a jump from 13.4 per cent to 16.8 per cent of the total — significantly higher than previous official estimates.
The data also showed there were fewer EU citizens in the country than expected, with the census counting 3.6mn people born in member states and 3.9mn EU passport holders.
