Eric Adams is dropping out of the New York City mayoral race just one month before the election, clearing the path for a showdown between democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani and former governor Andrew Cuomo.
“Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my re-election campaign,” Adams said in a video announcement posted to social media on Sunday.
He blamed his faltering re-election campaign on “constant media speculation” on what he would do next and the Campaign Finance Board’s decision to deny him public matching funds, which give a boost to donations.
