Australia will cut the number of incoming international students over concerns about migration and housing prices, a move that has raised fears for revenues in the country’s education sector.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government on Tuesday announced it would introduce a cap of 270,000 for new international students from next year. That represents a reduction of one-third from the 402,600 international students who commenced at higher education and vocational training institutions in Australia in 2023, according to Department of Education data.
The quota will be divided between universities and vocational colleges, and will need to be approved by a parliamentary vote.
