Since the Taliban’s lightning takeover of Afghanistan, European leaders have bent over backwards to stress their moral responsibility to house any Afghans that helped the EU and may want to leave the country.
“We cannot abandon people in immediate danger in Afghanistan,” EU commissioner Ylva Johannson said on Wednesday. “Evacuation of EU staff and citizens and local staff who have been working with the EU?.?.?.?is an immediate priority.”
However, when it comes to the risk of a large wave of Afghan migrants, Europe remains scarred by the memory of the Syrian refugee crisis and the bloc’s message is different.
