Protesters blocked roads and metro lines were suspended for a third day of travel bedlam in Hong Kong after police laid siege to a leading city university, marking a steep escalation of violence in the anti-government demonstrations.
The demonstrators have defied repeated warnings from Beijing that the chaos had to stop.
Hours after the territory’s police force on Tuesday warned the city was on “ the brink of a total breakdown”, officers used water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in an effort to disperse students who used Molotov cocktails to attack police lines.
