US politicians and industry bosses are using the furore surrounding Huawei to renew their call to keep the Chinese company out of America’s potentially lucrative 5G telecoms market, even though doing so could cost US companies billions of dollars.
Last week Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei and the daughter of the telecoms equipment maker’s founder, was arrested in Canada on charges of busting US sanctions on Iran. The company has insisted it was in compliance with American sanctions laws.
In the days following her arrest, American executives and politicians have urged the government to keep Chinese companies out of sensitive industries such as telecoms, and to push its allies to do the same.
