Ma Jian, the exiled Chinese author who was initially blocked from speaking at Hong Kong’s main literary festival, has warned that the city’s freedoms will come under greater pressure as Chinese President Xi Jinping pursues ever more control over Chinese society.
Mr Ma said that the Chinese Communist party would use the authoritarian playbook it deployed in Tibet to undermine the opposition in semi-autonomous Hong Kong.
“From Tibet, we can see that the next step for Hong Kong is to eliminate the local culture and the local politics, including journalists, lawyers and politicians,” he told the Financial Times.
