Bob Stover, a 74-year-old Democratic activist, remembers a bygone era decades ago when his hometown of High Point, North Carolina, was the bustling hub of the US furniture industry.
“You would ride downtown around noon, and the whistles would blow, and there were people streaming out of the factories for lunch,” Mr Stover said.
“Now, China is furniture country.”
