President Donald Trump’s preference for aggressively confronting China on trade had been apparent ever since the collapse of high-level talks between Washington and Beijing in May.
But Monday’s decision to impose tariffs on $200bn of Chinese imports brought the hostilities with China to an entirely new level, leaving little room for any settlement.
“It is my duty to protect the interests of working men and women, farmers, ranchers, businesses, and our country,” Mr Trump said. “My administration will not remain idle when those interests are under attack.”
