The Trump administration has said it will continue to conduct military exercises with South Korea as fears mount that Washington’s denuclearisation talks with North Korea have reached an impasse.
“We have no plans at this time to suspend any more exercises,” Jim Mattis, US defence secretary, told reporters on Tuesday.
Donald Trump, US president, said after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June that “we will be stopping the war games” with South Korea. Mr Trump himself called the joint military exercises — designed to allow Seoul to defend itself against Pyongyang — “very provocative”.
