Liu Xia, a Chinese poet and wife of the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo left China on a flight to Europe on Monday, ending years of house arrest endured since 2010 when her husband was awarded the prize.
Ms Liu boarded a flight to Europe around midday, according to a social media post by her brother Liu Hui, which was confirmed by several family friends. "She has started her new life," Mr Liu wrote.
Ms Liu is on a Finnair flight bound for Berlin, the BBC reported citing unnamed sources. Her release from years of isolation comes just days before the anniversary of the death of her husband, who died of cancer in 2017 while serving an 11-year jail sentence.
