The opposition candidate beaten by Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey’s presidential election said the country would now be subject to one-man rule as he conceded defeat.
At a press conference on Monday, Muharrem Ince, who campaigned for the secularist opposition, accepted the results of Sunday’s election, in which Mr Erdogan claimed 52.3 per cent in the presidential poll and secured a working majority in parliament.
“If the official list shows you have been defeated, you have been defeated,” Mr Ince told reporters in Ankara. But he added: “The chief point I will make is how big a threat the new regime that comes into effect today poses to Turkey.”
