China’s biggest search engine, Baidu, disclosed a quadrupling of profits on Friday, its first quarterly results following the $2.3bn IPO of iQiyi
last month. But despite iQiyi’s profit surge as Chinese users turned to paid content, the company had to bat away doubts over the government’s increasing censorship of entertainment.
Baidu’s revenues climbed 31 per cent from the previous year to Rmb20.9bn ($3.3bn) in the three months to the end of March. Profits almost quadrupled to Rmb6.7bn from Rmb1.8bn a year earlier, and the company also forecast second-quarter earnings above analyst estimates.
