The leader of Germany’s Jewish community has advised Jews not to wear yarmulkes in public, days after an Israeli wearing the religious head covering was attacked in Berlin by a man shouting racist epithets in Arabic.
The incident, which happened in broad daylight in a fashionable neighbourhood of the capital, came at a time of rising public concern about a surge in anti-Semitic attacks in German cities.
German newspapers have featured a string of stories in recent weeks about Jewish children being bullied and abused by fellow pupils, who are often from families of Turkish or Arab origin.
