The Philippines parliament voted in favour of President Rodrigo Duterte’s request to extend martial law over the southern island of Mindanao for a year on Wednesday following the end of a battle there with an Isis-linked insurgency in October.
Mr Duterte in May imposed martial law over the island after violence broke out in the city of Marawi involving an Islamist alliance that attempted to establish a caliphate in Southeast Asia.
The five-month siege saw more than 1,000 people killed, including dozens of civilians, and more than 350,000 people displaced.
