President Emmanuel Macron of France has appointed Edouard Philippe, a
little-known centre-right politician, as his prime minister in an attempt to win a majority in parliament for his year-old centrist party.
Mr Macron’s poaching of Mr Philippe to lead his government was announced on his first full day in office, shortly before he flew to Berlin for a meeting with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.
