More than 850 fugitives returned to China last year to face corruption charges as the country’s public security ministry stepped up its campaign to track down wanted officials and executives hiding overseas.
In a statement posted on its website, the public security ministry also announced the establishment of a new “overseas fugitive affairs” department to track down some of the country’s most wanted people.
Of the 857 suspects apprehended last year, 366 surrendered as part of Operation Fox Hunt, the overseas counterpart to President Xi Jinping’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign.
