The presidents of China and Taiwan met on Saturday afternoon in the first such encounter between two sides that have been fighting over the status of the self-governing island since 1949.
Smiling broadly and wearing complementary red and blue ties, China’s Xi Jinping and Taiwan’s Ma Ying-jeou shook hands for more than one minute in front of the world’s media on the neutral territory of Singapore’s Shangri-La hotel.
“The strait between us cannot separate brotherly love, it cannot stop compatriots from missing their native land and hoping for family reunion,” Mr Xi said at the start of their hour-long meeting.
