Huawei, the privately held Chinese telecoms group, boosted its research and development spending by almost one-third in 2014 as China’s 4G revolution marched on.
The company said it had increased its R&D spending 29 per cent year-on-year to $6.6bn, while revenues rose only 20.6 per cent to Rmb288bn ($46.5bn), largely confirming figures released in January.
Ken Hu, who shares the post of chief executive at Huawei on a rotating six-month basis, said that in 2015 the company would spend an amount roughly equivalent to 10 per cent of the 2014 R&D budget — $60m — on developing 5G technology.
