Twitter has opened an office in Hong Kong to try to lure more of China’s global companies to the social media platform, even though it is barred from operating in mainland China.
The office, which opened yesterday with just one employee, will target potential advertising clients in the business sector. Twitter generates most of its revenue from selling promoted tweets, accounts or topics to corporate clients.
“There are a number of these Chinese companies that are really aiming to be global now,” said Peter Greenberger, who heads the social media company’s emerging markets operations and is based in Singapore.
