Foreigners are fleeing Russia in unprecedented numbers, in a sign of how the country’s political stand-off with the west and its worsening economic crisis are deepening its isolation.
Excluding refugees from eastern Ukraine who fled to Russia to escape the war, there were 417,000 fewer foreigners in the country last month than a year ago, a drop of 4.7 per cent, according to Russian government figures.
The numbers from several western countries have plummeted by as much as one-third, reflecting Moscow’s estrangement from Europe and the US as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.
