Kik, the chat app that has become a favourite among teenagers, has raised $38.3m in venture capital funding to fuel its quest to become the “WeChat of the West”.
The Toronto-based group founded in 2009 is hoping its combination of chat, content, and even marketing robots for kids to chat with, will help it win a battle against Facebook and Snapchat for attention on smartphones.
Kik, which has 185m users, has completed a series C funding round led by Valiant Capital Partners, with participation from new investors SV Angel and Millennium Technology Value Partners.
