The Japanese economy unexpectedly entered recession in the third quarter, a surprise that may ensure Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will call snap elections and delay a consumption tax increase scheduled for next October.
Japanese GDP decreased by an annualised pace of 1.6 per cent in the third quarter, versus forecasts that it would rebound by 2.2 per cent.
The economy has been in a deep slump since a rise in Japan's consumption tax in April. The prior quarter's 7.1 per cent annualised slump was revised down to -7.3 per cent.
