The US began bombing Islamic militants in Syria on Monday night, in a substantial escalation of Washington’s military role in the Middle East long resisted by Barack Obama.
The Pentagon said in a statement that the US and “partner nation forces” – which it did not name – were undertaking military action against members of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, or Isis.
The attacks used a “mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles”, said Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman. But he declined to provide further details.
