Ukraine’s pro-western president has called snap parliamentary elections amid an escalating stand-off with Moscow over Kiev’s strategic EU integration foreign policy choice and still raging battles with Russian-backed separatists in eastern regions.
Petro Poroshenko’s widely expected decision to hold the poll, on October 26, was announced in a Monday evening television address to the nation.
A complete overhaul of government was one of the central demands of protesters who toppled Moscow-friendly Viktor Yanukovich from the presidency in February.
