The world should brace itself for a flurry of Anglospheric triumphalism. Having wrongly predicted a full US recovery each year since 2010, forecasters promise 2014 will be different. The chances are they will be fifth time lucky.
Prospects also look good for the UK to outgrow the rest of Europe. Though they may slow this year, Australia and Canada have outperformed almost everyone since the financial crash. Give or take a decimal point, English-speaking countries look poised to zip ahead of the rest of the rich world in 2014.
The recent past tell us we should be wary of Anglo world bragging. Its last bout was in the 1990s with the US internet revolution and the globalisation of New York and London’s financial sectors. History had ended. The Washington consensus that promoted economic liberalisation had prevailed. And London was the coolest city on the planet.
