For hotels in austerity China, only one thing can top a five-star rating – a four-star rating, reports Josh?Noble?in?Hong Kong.
Last year, with overall Chinese hotel revenues falling amid President Xi Jinping’s clampdown on lavish spending, more than 50 asked to have their five-star ratings cut. The state-run news service Xinhua said the move was an effort to regain business from chastened Communist party officials.
Some other hotels suspended applications for five-star gradings in the hope of staying on state registers of acceptably austere accommodation.
