Barack Obama spoke by telephone with Iran’s Hassan Rouhani on Friday, the first conversation between presidents of the two countries since 1979, capping a week of hectic diplomacy over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The brief conversation, which took place while Mr Rouhani was on his way to the airport in New York after spending the week at the UN, follows the announcement on Thursday that detailed negotiations with Iran over its nuclear activities will begin on October 15.
“I believe we can reach a comprehensive solution,” Mr Obama said at the White House on Friday.
