China has reported a new outbreak of violence in Xinjiang, the restive region in the country’s far north-west, as the ruling Communist party battles unrest in its two largest minority regions.
At least 12 people were killed in riots on Tuesday in Kargilik, or Yecheng as it is known in Chinese, a town on the Southern rim of the Taklamakan desert, state media said.
Rioters armed with knives attacked and killed 10 people outside the urban area in the evening, and police shot dead two rioters, said Xinhua, the official news agency.
