Tens of thousands of North Koreans lined snow-covered streets in Pyongyang yesterday as former leader Kim Jong-il’s body was driven through the capital in the opening of a two-day funeral ceremony.
People shovelled away the snow to clear a path for the funeral cortège, which steered unhurriedly past groups of citizens and soldiers, many of them bareheaded and wailing.
Kim Jong-eun, Kim Jong-il’s son and successor, walked to the right of his father’s hearse, which was covered in white chrysanthemums. He bowed his head and saluted troops as the temperature hovered just below freezing.
