The US is braced for retaliation from China after announcing a new $5.9bn package of arms sales to Taiwan, largely consisting of an upgrade to the island’s existing fleet of 145 F-16 fighter jets.
Beijing called in Gary Locke, the US ambassador to China, after being officially informed of the long-expected package on Wednesday morning in Washington.
“The wrongdoing by the US side will inevitably undermine bilateral relations as well as exchanges and co-operation in military and security areas,” said Zhang Zhijun, a Chinese vice-foreign minister, according to Xinhua, the official news agency.
