Col Muammer Gaddafi’s loyalists mounted a desperate defence of the Libyan leader’s headquarters on Monday, even as rebel forces swept through Tripoli streets and world leaders called for an orderly transition to a new government.
The rebels claimed to have taken control of state television and Tripoli’s airport. They also claimed to have captured three of Col Gaddafi’s sons, although one was later reported to have been freed by loyalist fighters.
The Arab League, which first called for international intervention six months ago, said the events were a “historic moment”.
