The publication of photographs of a handcuffed Dominique Strauss-Kahn has raised anger in France, where such images are considered to be harmful to the presumption of innocence.
While not questioning the right of US authorities to arrest Mr Strauss-Kahn after such a serious complaint, French officials point out that showing such images in France is illegal.
France’s television regulator warned broadcasters to exercise greater caution in showing images of people facing criminal procedures, after public criticism over photographs of the International Monetary Fund boss being led away to face charges of attempted rape in New York.
