Back in the 1980s, Japanese, flush with cash, would flood luxury stores in Paris, Milan, London and New York, picking up the most expensive items.
Thirty years on, it is the wealthy Chinese who have replaced them as the conspicuous shoppers of luxury, including in Japan itself; a market well known for its beautiful store layouts, service and Japan-only limited goods.
But Chinese shoppers also appear to be coming in their droves to Japanese outlet malls, which bring together hundreds of shops, some luxury and others cheaper chain stores in one location, usually outside a main city and near large expressway interchanges.
