Japan's government has raised hopes for closer ties with China by approving at exceptionally short notice an imperial audience for visiting Chinese heir apparent Xi Jinping.
But the decision sparked opposition, even within the ruling party.
The scheduled arrival today of Mr Xi, China's vice-president, comes just days after a high-profile trip to Beijing by Ichiro Ozawa, secretary-general of Japan's ruling Democratic party and mastermind of its August election victory.
