Barack Obama's plan to hold a town hall-style meeting in Shanghai with young Chinese people next week, one of the centrepieces of the US president's first visit to China, was uncertain last night as the two governments held last-minute negotiations over the format.
The White House had hoped the Monday morning forum would be Mr Obama's one big chance to try and communicate directly with young Chinese people.
However, as Mr Obama left yesterday for Tokyo, the first stop on his nine-day Asian trip, there was still no agreement with the Chinese authorities on how the meeting would be organised.
