Manmohan Singh, India's prime minister, has criticised the nuclear non-proliferation treaty as not being up to the “formidable” task of protecting the world from nuclear terrorism.
His comments yesterday are at odds with an appeal by Barack Obama, the US president, to strengthen the NPT in the face of grave anxieties about Iran's nuclear programme.
Mr Singh said the NPT's “deficiencies” had made the world a more dangerous place and called for its replacement with a nuclear weapons convention to agree steps towards eliminating nuclear weapons.
