Dell yesterday made its long-awaited move into the IT services business with the world's second-biggest personal computer maker launching a $3.9bn agreed cash offer to buy Texas neighbour Perot Systems.
Michael Dell, the company's founder, had been openly interested in large acquisitions since his return as chief executive two years ago and services have been an obvious weak spot.
The group's over-dependence on sales of PCs and related gear has left it more exposed than rivals to economic cycles.
