China locked down Urumqi, the capital of northwestern Xinjiang province, yesterday as officials said that 156 people had been killed in rioting, in the worst ethnic unrest in the country since the Cultural Revolution.
State media said that 800 people were injured, 261 vehicles burnt and 203 shops destroyed.
The tensions come as Hu Jintao, the Chinese president, prepares to meet world leaders tomorrow at the G8 summit in Italy.
