The US telecommunications handset maker, which revealed yesterday it had suffered a loss in the third quarter, had agreed earlier this year to the demands of billionaire investor Carl Icahn to split off the handset unit.
But yesterday the company said it would not meet the goal of completing the move by the third quarter of 2009 due to the financial crisis, although it said it still intended to proceed with the spin-off at a later date.
In further evidence of the handset unit's problems, its revenue dropped 31 per cent to $3.1bn in the latest quarter while its operating loss widened from $248m to $840m.
